AfBC European Union (EU) African Business Network is a platform created to inspire, connect, educate and support African Diaspora across the globe to start and scale successful and fulfilling businesses, enhance professional career and elevated leadership to increase wealth and participation in the economy.
The European Union (EU) is Africa’s leading trade and investment partner. In 2024, trade between the EU and Africa reached €355 billion, representing roughly one-third of Africa’s total trade. The EU’s position as Africa’s top investment partner is underscored by its foreign direct investment (FDI) stock in the continent, which stood at €239 billion in 2023.
Trade between the EU and Africa is diverse and mutually beneficial. Key African exports to the EU include minerals such as cobalt, copper, and gold, along with oil, gas, agricultural products like coffee, cocoa, and cotton, and increasingly, manufactured goods. In return, the EU exports machinery, vehicles, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and processed foods to African markets.
To strengthen economic ties, the EU has established Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) with several African regions, including West Africa, East Africa, and Southern Africa. These agreements aim to promote free trade, enhance market access, support regional integration, and gradually eliminate trade barriers.
The EU-Africa economic relationship is multifaceted, encompassing trade, investment, and development cooperation. Europe depends on Africa for critical resources and markets, while African countries benefit from investments, technology transfer, and access to EU markets. While challenges persist—such as trade imbalances, infrastructure gaps, and competition from other global powers—strategic collaborations in areas like green energy, digitalization, and regional integration offer significant long-term growth potential for both continents.
Supporting these objectives, the AfBC European Union (EU) African Business Network provides a strategic platform to inspire, connect, educate, and empower members of the African Diaspora worldwide. The network fosters the creation and growth of sustainable enterprises, supports professional development, strengthens leadership capacity, and contributes to wealth generation and increased participation in the global economy.
